"그렇게 하겠습니다. 이 종이 무엇을 할 수 있는지, 임금님이 아시게 될 것입니다." 아기스가 다윗에게 말하였다. "주님께서는 이미 당신에게서 떠나 당신의 원수가 되셨는데, 나에게 더 묻는 이유가 무엇이오? 　17) 주님께서는, 나를 시켜 전하신 말씀 그대로 당신에게 하셔서, 이미 이 나라의 왕위를 당신의 손에서 빼앗아 당신의 가까이에 있는 다윗에게 주셨소. 　18) 당신은 주님께 순종하지 아니하고, 주님의 분노를 아말렉에게 쏟지 아니하였소. 그렇기 때문에 주님께서 오늘 당신에게 이렇게 하셨소. 　19) 주님께서는 이제 당신과 함께 이스라엘도 블레셋 사람의 손에 넘겨 주실 터인데, 당신은 내일 당신 자식들과 함께 내가 있는 이 곳으로 오게 될 것이오. 주님께서는 이스라엘 군대도 블레셋 사람의 손에 넘겨 주실 것이오." 　20) 그러자 사울은 갑자기 그 자리에 쓰러져 땅바닥에 벌렁 넘어졌다. 사무엘의 말을 듣고서, 너무나 두려웠기 때문이다. 게다가 그는 그 날 하루 종일, 그리고 밤새도록 굶었으므로, 힘마저 쭉 빠져 있었다. 　21) 그 여인이 사울에게 가까이 와서, 그가 아주 기진맥진해 있는 것을 보고, 그에게 말하였다. "그대는 부하를 거느리고 우리 대열에 끼여 같이 출전하게 될 터이니 그리 아시오." 　2) 다윗이 "알았습니다. 분부만 내리시면 그대로 하겠습니다." 하고 선뜻 대답하자 아기스는 다윗에게 "그렇다면, 나는 장군을 나의 종신호위대장으로 삼겠소." 하였다. 　3) 사무엘은 이미 죽어 이스라엘 온 국민의 애도 속에 고향 라마에 묻혔다. 한편 사울은 혼백을 불러내는 무당과 박수를 나라에서 몰아내었다. 　4) 불레셋 군이 수넴에 집결하여 진을 치자 사울도 이스라엘 전군을 길보아에 집결시켜 진을 치기는 했지만 　5) 불레셋 진영을 본 사울은 몹시 겁에 질렸다. 　6) 그래서 사울은 야훼께 어떻게 하면 좋겠는가 여쭈어보았다. 그러나 야훼께서는 꿈으로도, 우림으로도, 예언자로도 대답해 주지 않으셨다. 　7) 그리하여 사울은 신하들에게 "혼백을 불러내는 무당을 찾아보아라. 내가 가서 물어봐야 하겠다." 하고 영을 내렸다. 신하들이 "엔도르에 혼백을 불러내는 무당이 있습니다." 하고 아뢰자 　8) 사울은 남이 알아보지 못하게 옷을 갈아 입고는 두 신하를 데리고 밤에 그 여자를 찾아가서 "내가 말하는 혼백을 불러내어 내 운수를 보아다오." 하고 청하였다. 　9) 그 여자가 사울에게 "당신은 혼백을 불러내는 무당과 박수가 이 땅에서 왕명으로 근절된 것을 모르십니까? 그런데 생사람을 잡으려고 이 목에 올가미를 씌우시는 겁니까?" 하고 대답하자 　10) 사울은 야훼 앞에서 맹세하였다. "내가 살아 계신 야훼 앞에서 맹세한다. 이 일로 자네에게 죄가 돌아가는 일은 결코 없으리라." 　11) 그러자 여인이 물었다. "누구를 불러드릴까요?" 그가 대답하였다. "사무엘을 불러다오." 　12) 그 여자는 사무엘이 나타난 것을 보고 놀라 소리치며 사울에게 물었다. "어찌하여 저를 속이셨습니까? 당신은 사울 임금님이 아니십니까?" 　13) 왕이 말하였다. "두려워 마라. 무엇이 보이는지 말만 하여라." 그 여자는 "지하에서 유령이 올라오는 것이 보입니다." 하고 대답하였다. 　14) 사울이 다시 그 여자에게 "어떤 모습이냐?" 하고 묻자 "도포를 입은 노인이 올라옵니다." 하고 대답하였다. 이 말에 사울은 그가 사무엘인 줄 알고 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절을 하였다. 　15) 사무엘이 사울에게 물었다. "야훼께서 이미 너를 떠나 네 원수가 되셨는데 어쩌자고 나에게 묻느냐? 　17) 너는 야훼의 말씀을 듣지 않았느냐? 야훼께서는 이미 그대로 하셨다. 이미 이 나라를 네 손에서 빼앗아 동족인 다윗에게 주셨다. 　18) 너는 야훼의 말씀을 듣지 않았고 그의 진노를 아말렉에게 쏟지 않았다. 야훼께서 오늘 너에게 이렇게 하시는 것은 그 때문이다. 　19) 야훼께서는 너는 물론이요 이스라엘까지도 전부 불레셋 군의 손에 부치셨다. 내일이면 너와 네 아들들이 나와 함께 있게 되리라. 게다가 야훼께서는 이스라엘 군대도 불레셋 군의 손에 부치실 것이다." 　20) 이 말을 듣고 사울은 그만 땅바닥에 번듯이 쓰러졌다. 하루 종일, 그리고 밤새도록 아무것도 입에 대지 못해 기운이 빠진데다가 사무엘이 하는 말에 겁을 먹고 기절했던 것이다. 　21) 여자가 가까이 와서 사울이 겁에 질려 있는 것을 보고 간청하였다. "보십시오. 이 계집종은 임금님의 말씀을 따라 목숨을 걸고 분부대로 하였습니다. 　22) 그러니 이제 임금님께서도 이 계집종이 아뢰는 말씀을 들어주십시오. 변변치 않지만 잡수실 것을 장만하겠습니다. 길을 가시려면 무엇을 좀 드시고 기운을 차리셔야 하지 않겠습니까?" 　23) 사울은 먹지 않겠다고 고집을 부렸으나, 신하들과 그 여자의 청에 못 이겨 일어나 평상에 앉았다. 　24) 여자는 서둘러 집에 있는 살진 송아지를 잡고 또 밀가루를 가져다가 누룩 넣을 새도 없이 빵을 구워서 　25) 사울과 그의 신하들 앞에 차려놓았다. 그들은 그것을 먹고 그 밤으로 길을 떠났다.

Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men will accompany me in the army.” 　2) David said, “Then you will see for yourself what your servant can do.” Achish replied, “Very well, I will make you my bodyguard for life.” 　3) Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land. 　4) The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all Israel and set up camp at Gilboa. 　5) When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. 　6) He inquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 　7) Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said. 　8) So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.” 　9) But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?” 　10) Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.” 　11) Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said. 　12) When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!” 　13) The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?” The woman said, “I see a ghostly figure* coming up out of the earth.” / *Or see spirits; or see gods 　14) “What does he look like?” he asked. “An old man wearing a robe is coming up,” she said. Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 　15) Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.” 　16) Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? 　17) The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors - to David. 　18) Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today. 　19) The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.” 　20) Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night. 　21) When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do. 　22) Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.” 　23) He refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his men joined the woman in urging him, and he listened to them. He got up from the ground and sat on the couch. 　24) The woman had a fattened calf at the house, which she butchered at once. She took some flour, kneaded it and baked bread without yeast. 　25) Then she set it before Saul and his men, and they ate. That same night they got up and left.

And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a medium at En-dor." 　8) So Saul disguised himself and put on other garments and went, he and two men with him. And they came to the woman by night. And he said, "Divine for me by a spirit and bring up for me whomever I shall name to you." 　9) The woman said to him, "Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land. And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and paid homage. 　15) Then Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" Saul answered, "I am in great distress, for the Philistines are warring against me, and God has turned away from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have summoned you to tell me what I shall do." 　16) And Samuel said, "Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has turned from you and become your enemy? 　17) The LORD has done to you as he spoke by me, for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. 　18) Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. 　19) Moreover, the LORD will give Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me.
