"저 할례받지 않은 이방인의 전초부대로 건너가자. 주님께서 도와 주시면 승리를 거둘 수도 있다. 주님께서 허락하시는 승리는 군대의 수가 많고 적음에 달려 있지 않다." 　7) 그의 무기를 든 병사가 대답하였다. "무엇이든 하시고자 하는 대로 하십시오. 무엇을 하시든지 그대로 따르겠습니다." 　8) 요나단이 말하였다. "우리가 저 사람들에게로 건너가서 그들에게 우리를 드러내 보이자. 　9) 그 때에 그들이 우리에게, 꼼짝 말고 서서 자기들이 올 때까지 기다리라고 하면, 우리는 올라가지 않고 있던 그 자리에 그대로 선다. 　10) 그러나 그들이 우리를 자기들에게로 올라오라고 하면, 우리는 올라간다. 이것을, 주님께서 그들을 우리에게 넘겨 주셨다는 징조로 알자." 　11) 그 두 사람이 블레셋 사람의 전초부대에게 자기들을 드러내 보이니, 블레셋 군인들이 소리쳤다. "저기 보아라! 히브리 사람들이 그 숨어 있는 굴에서 나온다." 　12) 전초부대의 군인들이 요나단과 그의 무기를 든 병사에게 소리쳤다. "이리로 올라오너라. 너희에게 보여 줄 것이 있다." 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 병사를 돌아보며 말하였다. "너는 나를 따라 올라오너라. 주님께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨다." 　13) 요나단이 손과 발로 기어올라갔고, 그의 무기를 든 병사도 그 뒤를 따라 올라갔다. 요나단이 블레셋 군인들을 쳐서 쓰러뜨렸고, 그의 무기를 든 병사도 그 뒤를 따라가면서, 닥치는 대로 쳐죽였다. 　14) 이렇게 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 병사와 함께, 겨릿소 한 쌍이 반나절에 갈아엎을 만한 들판에서, 처음으로 쳐죽인 사람은 스무 명쯤 되었다. 　15) 이 때에 블레셋 군인들은, 진 안에 있는 군인들이나 싸움터에 있는 군인들이나 전초부대의 군인들이나 특공대의 군인들이나, 모두가 공포에 떨고 있었다. 땅마저 흔들렸다. 하나님이 보내신 크나큰 공포가 그들을 휘감았다. 　16) 베냐민 지역의 기브아에서 망을 보는 사울의 파수꾼들이 건너다 보니, 수많은 블레셋 군인들이 아우성을 치며 이리저리 몰려다니고 있었다. 　17) 그러자 사울이 자기와 함께 있는 군인들에게 명령하였다. "우리 가운데서 누가 빠져 나갔는지 조사하여 밝혀 내어라!" 사람들이 조사하여 보니, 요나단과 그의 무기를 드는 병사가 없었다. 　18) 그러자 사울은 아히야에게 하나님의 ②궤를 가지고 오라고 말하였다. 그 때에는 하나님의 궤가 이스라엘 자손과 함께 있었다. / ②칠십인역에는 '에봇' 　19) 사울이 제사장에게 말을 하고 있는 동안에, 블레셋 진영에서 일어난 아우성 소리가 점점 더 크게 들려왔다. 그래서 사울은 제사장에게 궤를 가지고 오지 말라고 하였다. 　20) 사울과 그를 따르는 온 백성이 함께 함성을 지르며 싸움터로 달려가 보니, 블레셋 군인들이 칼을 뽑아들고 저희끼리 서로 정신없이 쳐죽이고 있었다. 　21) 블레셋 사람들 편을 들어 싸움터에까지 나왔던 히브리 사람들도, 이제는 돌이켜서 사울과 요나단이 지휘하는 이스라엘 편이 되었다. 　22) 또 전에 에브라임 산간지방으로 들어가 숨었던 이스라엘 사람들도, 블레셋 사람들이 지고 달아난다는 소식을 듣고, 모두 뛰어나와 블레셋 군인들을 뒤쫓으며 싸웠다. 　23) 그 날 주님께서 이렇게 이스라엘을 구원하셨다. 전쟁은 벳아웬 너머에까지 번졌다.

삼상 13:15-14:23 　15b) 사울은 나머지 군대를 이끌고 길갈에서 적군 쪽으로 이동하였다. 사울이 베냐민 지방 게바로 올라가 병력을 점검하여 보니 육백 명밖에 되지 않았다. 　16) 사울과 그의 아들 요나단이 거느린 군대는 베냐민 지방 게바에서 믹마스에 진을 친 불레셋 군과 대진하였다. 　17) 불레셋 진영에서는 기습부대가 셋으로 나뉘어 출동하였다. 한 부대는 수알 지방 오브라 쪽으로 향하고 　18) 다른 한 부대는 벳호론 쪽으로, 나머지 한 부대는 스보임 골짜기를 굽어보고 광야가 바라보이는 지역으로 향하였다. 　19) 그 당시 이스라엘에는 대장장이가 한 명도 없었다. 불레셋이 히브리인들에게 칼이나 창 같은 것을 만들지 못하게 했던 것이다. 　20) 그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 보습이나 곡괭이나 도끼나 낫을 벼리려면 불레셋 사람이 사는 데로 내려가지 않으면 안 되었다. 　21) 보습이나 곡괭이를 벼리는 값은 삼분의 이 세겔이었고 도끼를 벼리고 낫을 가는 값은 십분의 일 세겔이었다. 　22) 그래서 그 전쟁이 터졌을 때 사울과 요나단을 따르는 무리에게는 칼도 창도 없었다. 무기를 가진 사람은 사울과 그의 아들 요나단뿐이었다. 　23) 불레셋 군의 전초부대는 믹마스로 건너가는 길목까지 나와 있었다. 　1) 하루는 사울의 아들 요나단이 자기의 무기 당번에게 "우리끼리 저 건너 불레셋 초소로 가자." 하고 일렀다. 그러나 아버지에게는 알리지 않았다. 　2) 그 때 사울은 육백 명 가량 되는 군인을 거느리고 게바 변두리 미그론에 있는 석류나무 아래 진을 치고 있었다. 　3) 실로에서 야훼의 사제로 있던 엘리의 증손이요, 비느하스의 손자요, 이가봇의 조카며 아히툽의 아들인 아히야가 에봇을 모셔 왔다. 그런데 요나단이 자리를 뜬 줄은 아무도 몰랐다. 　4) 불레셋 진영으로 건너가는 길목 양쪽에는 날카로운 돌기둥이 둘 있었는데, 하나는 보세스라 하고 다른 하나는 세네라고 하였다. 　5) 하나는 북쪽에서 믹마스를 향하고 다른 하나는 남쪽에서 게바를 향하여 서 있었다. 　6) 요나단이 자기 무기 당번에게 일렀다. "자! ①오랑캐 놈들의 초소로 들어가자. 야훼께서 손을 써주실 것이다. 야훼께서 우리를 도와만 주신다면 적의 수가 많든 적든 무슨 상관이겠느냐?" / ①히브리어 본문: "할례받지 않은 자들." 　7) "생각대로 하십시오. 어떤 결정을 내리시든지 저는 그대로 따를 뿐입니다." 무기 당번이 이렇게 말하자 　8) 요나단은 입을 열었다.
