"저 블레셋 사람을 죽이고 이스라엘이 받는 치욕을 씻어내는 사람에게는, 어떻게 해준다구요? 저 할례도 받지 않은 블레셋 녀석이 무엇이기에, 살아 계시는 하나님을 섬기는 군인들을 이렇게 모욕하는 것입니까?" 　27) 군인들은 앞에서 말한 내용과 같이, 저 자를 죽이는 사람에게는 이러이러한 상이 내릴 것이라고 대답해 주었다. 　28) 다윗이 군인들과 이렇게 이야기하는 것을 맏형 엘리압이 듣고, 다윗에게 화를 내며 꾸짖었다. "너는 어쩌자고 여기까지 내려왔느냐? 들판에 있는, 몇 마리도 안 되는 양은 누구에게 떠맡겨 놓았느냐? 이 건방지고 고집 센 녀석아, 네가 전쟁 구경을 하려고 내려온 것을, 누가 모를 줄 아느냐?" 　29) 다윗이 대들었다. "내가 무엇을 잘못하였다는 겁니까? 물어 보지도 못합니까?" 　30) 그런 다음에 다윗은, 몸을 돌려 형 옆에서 떠나 다른 사람 앞으로 가서, 똑같은 말로 또 물어 보았다. 거기에서도 사람들이 똑같은 말을 하였다.

"저 불레셋 사람을 죽여 우리의 치욕을 씻어주는 사람은 어떻게 해준다구요? 저 불레셋의 ①오랑캐 녀석이 도대체 누구기에 살아 계시는 하느님께서 거느리시는 이 군대에게 욕지거리를 하는 겁니까?" / ①히브리어 본문: "할례받지 않은 자." 　27) 군인들은 골리앗을 죽이면 이러이러하게 해준다고 같은 말을 일러주었다. 　28) 다윗이 이렇게 다른 사람들과 이야기하는 것을 큰 형 엘리압이 엿듣고 화를 내며 소리쳤다. "네가 무엇을 하겠다고 여기 내려왔느냐? 들판에 있는 몇 마리 안 되는 양 새끼는 누구한테 맡겼지? 이 건방진 못된 녀석, 네가 싸움 구경하러 온 걸 모를 줄 아느냐?" 　29) 다윗은 "그저 물어본 것뿐인데 내가 지금 무엇을 했다고 그래요?" 하고는 　30) 형을 떠나 다른 사람한테 가서 같은 말을 물어보았다. 대답은 전과 같았다.

He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 　21) Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 　22) David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were. 　23) As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. 　24) Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear. 　25) Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel.” 　26) David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 　27) They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.” 　28) When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.” 　29) “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” 　30) He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before.
