삼상 17:31-58 　31) 다윗이 한 말이 사람들에게 알려지고, 누군가가 그것을 사울에게 알렸다. 그러자 사울이 그를 데려오게 하였다. 　32) 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "누구든지 저 자 때문에 사기를 잃어서는 안 됩니다. 임금님의 종인 제가 나가서, 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우겠습니다." 　33) 그러나 사울은 다윗을 말렸다. "그만두어라. 네가 어떻게 저 자와 싸운단 말이냐? 저 자는 평생 군대에서 뼈가 굵은 자이지만, 너는 아직 어린 소년이 아니냐?" 　34) 그러나 다윗은 굽히지 않고 사울에게 말하였다. "임금님의 종인 저는 아버지의 양 떼를 지켜 왔습니다. 사자나 곰이 양 떼에 달려들어 한 마리라도 물어가면, 　35) 저는 곧바로 뒤쫓아가서 그 놈을 쳐죽이고, 그 입에서 양을 꺼내어 살려 내곤 하였습니다. 그 짐승이 저에게 덤벼들면, 그 턱수염을 붙잡고 때려 죽였습니다. 　36) 제가 이렇게 사자도 죽이고 곰도 죽였으니, 저 할례받지 않은 블레셋 사람도 그 꼴로 만들어 놓겠습니다. 살아 계시는 하나님의 군대를 모욕한 자를 어찌 그대로 두겠습니까?" 　37) 다윗은 말을 계속하였다. "사자의 발톱이나 곰의 발톱에서 저를 살려 주신 주님께서, 저 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 틀림없이 저를 살려 주실 것입니다." 그제서야 사울이 다윗에게 허락하였다. "그렇다면, 나가도 좋다. 주님께서 너와 함께 계시길 바란다." 　38) 사울은 자기의 군장비로 다윗을 무장시켜 주었다. 머리에는 놋투구를 씌워 주고, 몸에는 갑옷을 입혀 주었다. 　39) 다윗은, 허리에 사울의 칼까지 차고, 시험삼아 몇 걸음 걸어 본 다음에, 사울에게 "이런 무장에는 제가 익숙하지 못합니다. 이렇게 무장을 한 채로는 걸어갈 수도 없습니다" 하고는 그것을 다 벗었다. 그렇게 무장을 해 본 일이 없었기 때문이다. 　40) 그런 다음에, 다윗은 목동의 지팡이를 들고, 시냇가에서 돌 다섯 개를 골라서, 자기가 메고 다니던 목동의 도구인 주머니에 집어 넣은 다음, 자기가 쓰던 무릿매를 손에 들고, 그 블레셋 사람에게 가까이 나아갔다. 　41) 그 블레셋 사람도 방패 든 사람을 앞세우고 다윗에게 점점 가까이 다가왔다. 　42) 그 블레셋 사람은 다윗을 보고 나서, 그가 다만 잘생긴 홍안 소년에 지나지 않는다는 것을 알고는, 그를 우습게 여겼다. 　43) 그 블레셋 사람은 다윗에게 "막대기를 들고 나에게로 나아오다니, 네가 나를 개로 여기는 것이냐?" 하고 묻고는, 자기 신들의 이름으로 다윗을 저주하였다. 　44) 그 블레셋 사람이 다윗에게 말하였다. "어서 내 앞으로 오너라. 내가 너의 살점을 공중의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어 주마." 　45) 그러자 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람에게 말하였다. "너는 칼을 차고 창을 메고 투창을 들고 나에게로 나왔으나, 나는 네가 모욕하는 이스라엘 군대의 하나님 곧 만군의 주님의 이름을 의지하고 너에게로 나왔다. 　46) 주님께서 너를 나의 손에 넘겨 주실 터이니, 내가 오늘 너를 쳐서 네 머리를 베고, 블레셋 사람의 주검을 모조리 공중의 새와 땅의 들짐승에게 밥으로 주어서, 온 세상이 이스라엘의 하나님을 알게 하겠다. 　47) 또 주님께서는 칼이나 창 따위를 쓰셔서 구원하시는 것이 아니라는 것을, 여기에 모인 이 온 무리가 알게 하겠다. 전쟁에서 이기고 지는 것은 주님께 달린 것이다. 주님께서 너희를 모조리 우리 손에 넘겨 주실 것이다." 　48) 드디어 그 블레셋 사람이 몸을 움직여 다윗에게 점점 가까이 다가오자, 다윗은 재빠르게 그 블레셋 사람이 서 있는 대열 쪽으로 달려가면서, 　49) 주머니에 손을 넣어 돌을 하나 꺼낸 다음, 그 돌을 무릿매로 던져서, 그 블레셋 사람의 이마를 맞히었다. 골리앗이 이마에 돌을 맞고 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다. 　50) 이렇게 다윗은 무릿매와 돌 하나로 그 블레셋 사람을 이겼다. 그는 칼도 들고 가지 않고 그 블레셋 사람을 죽였다. 　51) 다윗이 달려가서, 그 블레셋 사람을 밟고 서서, 그의 칼집에서 칼을 빼어 그의 목을 잘라 죽였다. 블레셋 군인들은 자기들의 장수가 이렇게 죽는 것을 보자 모두 달아났다. 　52) 이스라엘과 유다 사람들이 일어나 함성을 지르며 블레셋 사람들을 쫓아서, 가이를 지나 에그론 성문에까지 이르렀다. 그리하여 칼에 찔려 죽은 블레셋 사람의 주검이, 사아라임에서 가드와 에그론에 이르기까지 온 길에 널렸다. 　53) 이스라엘 자손은 블레셋 군대를 쫓다가 돌아와서, 블레셋 군대의 진을 약탈하였다. 　54) 다윗은, 그 블레셋 사람의 머리는 예루살렘으로 가지고 갔으나, 그의 무기들은 자기 장막에 간직하였다. 　55) 사울은, 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람에 맞서서 나가는 것을 보면서, 군사령관 아브넬에게 물었다. "아브넬 장군, 저 소년이 누구의 아들이오?" 아브넬이 대답하였다. "임금님, 황공하오나 저도 잘 모릅니다." 　56) 왕이 명령하였다. "저 젊은이가 누구의 아들인지 직접 알아보시오." 　57) 마침내 다윗이 그 블레셋 사람을 죽이고 돌아오자, 아브넬이 그를 데리고 사울 앞으로 갔다. 다윗의 손에는 여전히 그 블레셋 사람의 머리가 들려 있었다. 　58) 사울이 다윗에게 물었다. "너는 누구의 아들이냐?" 다윗이 대답하였다. "베들레헴 사람, 임금님의 종 이새의 아들입니다."

삼상 17:31-58 　31) 다윗이 한 말이 퍼져서 사울의 귀에까지 들어갔다. 그래서 사울이 그를 불러들이자 　32) 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "저자 때문에 상심하지 마십시오. 소인이 나가 저 불레셋 놈과 싸우겠습니다." 　33) 그러나 사울은 다윗을 말리며 말했다. "네가 나가 저 불레셋 놈과 싸우다니, 어림도 없는 일이다. 그는 어렸을 때부터 싸움으로 몸을 단련해 온 자인데, 너는 아직 나이 어린 소년이 아니냐?" 　34) 그러나 다윗은 굽히지 않았다. "소인은 아버지의 양을 쳐왔습니다. 사자나 곰이 나타나 양 새끼를 한 마리라도 물어가면 　35) 소인은 한사코 뒤쫓아가서 그놈을 쳐 그 아가리에서 양 새끼를 빼내곤 했습니다. 그놈이 돌아서서 덤벼들면 턱수염을 휘어잡고 때려죽였습니다. 　36) 소인은 이렇게 사자도 죽이고 곰도 죽였습니다. 저 불레셋의 오랑캐놈도 그렇게 해치우겠습니다. 살아 계시는 하느님께서 거느리시는 이 군대에게 욕지거리를 퍼붓는 자를 어찌 그냥 내버려두겠습니까?" 　37) 계속해서 다윗이 말하였다. "사자와 곰으로부터 소인을 살려내신 야훼께서 저 불레셋 놈에게서도 소인을 살려내실 것입니다." 그제야 사울이 다윗에게 허락을 내렸다. "그러면 나가거라. 야훼께서 너와 함께 하시기를 빈다." 　38) 사울은 자기 군복을 다윗에게 입힌 다음, 머리에는 놋투구를 씌워주고 몸에는 갑옷을 입혔다. 　39) 그리고 자기 칼을 다윗의 군복에 채워주었다. 그러나 다윗은 이런 것을 입어본 일이 없었으므로 몸을 제대로 움직일 수가 없었다. 그래서 다윗은 사울에게 "이런 것은 입어본 적이 없습니다. 이래 가지고는 몸을 제대로 움직일 수가 없습니다." 하고는 그것을 모두 벗어버렸다. 　40) 그리고 다윗은 자기의 막대기를 집어 들고 개울가에서 자갈 다섯 개를 골라 목동 주머니에 넣은 다음 돌팔매 끈을 가지고 그 불레셋 장수 쪽으로 걸어갔다. 　41) 불레셋 장수도 방패 당번을 앞세우고 한 걸음 한 걸음 다윗에게 다가왔다. 　42) 불레셋 장수는 다윗을 건너다보고 볼이 붉은 잘생긴 어린아이라는 것을 알고는 우습게 여겨, 　43) "막대기는 왜 가지고 나왔느냐? 내가 개란 말이냐?" 하고는 자기 신의 이름을 부르며 다윗을 저주하였다. 　44) 그리고 불레셋 장수는 다윗을 을러메었다. "어서 나오너라. 네 살점을 하늘의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어주마." 　45) 그러나 다윗은 불레셋 장수에게 이렇게 응수하였다. "네가 칼을 차고 창과 표창을 잡고 나왔다만, 나는 만군의 야훼의 이름을 믿고 나왔다. 네가 욕지거리를 퍼붓는 이스라엘 군대의 하느님의 이름을 믿고 나왔다. 　46) 오늘 야훼께서 너를 내 손아귀에 넣어주셨다. 나야말로 네놈을 쳐서 목을 떨어뜨리고 네 시체와 불레셋 전군의 시체를 하늘의 새와 들짐승의 밥으로 만들어주리라. 그리하여 이스라엘이 모시는 하느님이 어떤 분이신지 천하에 알리리라. 　47) 여기 모인 모든 사람은 이제 야훼께서는 칼이나 창 따위를 써서 구원하시는 것이 아니라는 사실을 알게 되리라. 야훼께서 몸소 싸우시어 네놈들을 우리 손에 넘겨주실 것이다." 　48) 불레셋 장수가 한 걸음 한 걸음 다가오자, 다윗은 재빨리 대열에서 벗어나 뛰쳐나가다가 　49) 주머니에서 돌 하나를 꺼내어 팔매질을 하여 그 불레셋 장수의 이마를 맞혔다. 돌이 이마에 박히자 그는 땅바닥에 쓰러졌다. 　50) 이리하여 다윗은 칼도 없이 팔매돌 하나로 불레셋 장수를 누르고 쳐죽였다. 　51) 다윗은 달려가서 그 불레셋 장수를 밟고 서서 그의 칼집에서 칼을 빼어 목을 잘랐다. 불레셋 군은 저희 장수가 죽는 것을 보고 도망치기 시작하였다. 　52) 이스라엘과 유다 군대는 때를 놓치지 않고 함성을 지르며 불레셋 군을 추격하여 갓을 지나 에크론 성문에까지 이르렀다. 그리하여 사아라임에서 갓과 에크론에 이르는 길에는 불레셋 군의 시체가 뒹굴게 되었다. 　53) 이스라엘 군은 추격을 마치고 돌아와서 불레셋 진영을 약탈하였다. 　54) 다윗은 그 불레셋 장수의 목을 예루살렘으로 가져가고 그의 무기는 자기의 천막에 간직하였다. 　55) 사울은 다윗이 그 불레셋 장수와 대결하러 나가는 것을 보고 사령관 아브넬에게 "아브넬 사령관, 저기 저 소년은 누구의 아들이오?" 하고 물었다. 삼상 17:31-58 　31) What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him. 　32) David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” 　33) Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” 　34) But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 　35) I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 　36) Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 　37) The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.” 　38) Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic.
