"우리가 내일 당신들에게 나아가 항복하겠습니다. 그 때 가서는 우리에게 하고 싶은 대로 하시오." 　11) 다음날 아침 일찍 사울은 군인들을 세 부대로 나누어 가지고, 새벽녘에 적진 한복판으로 들어가서, 날이 한창 뜨거울 때까지 암몬 사람들을 쳐서 죽였다. 살아 남은 사람들은 다 흩어져서, 두 사람도 함께 있는 일이 없었다. 　12) 백성이 사무엘에게 와서 말하였다. "사울이 어떻게 우리의 왕이 될 수 있느냐고 떠들던 자들이 누구입니까? 그런 자들을 내주십시오. 우리가 그들을 쳐서 죽이겠습니다." 　13) 그러자 사울이 나서서 말하였다. "오늘은 주님께서 이스라엘 백성을 구원하여 주신 날이오. 오늘은 사람을 죽이지 못하오." 　14) 사무엘이 백성들에게 말하였다. "우리가 길갈로 가서, 사울이 우리의 왕이라는 것을 거기에서 새롭게 선포합시다." 　15) 그래서 온 백성이 길갈로 가서 그 곳 길갈에 계시는 주님 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 세웠다. 그들은 거기에서 짐승을 잡아서 주님께 화목제물로 바쳤다. 거기에서 사울과 모든 이스라엘 사람들이 함께 크게 기뻐하였다.

"우리가 이스라엘 곳곳에 전갈을 보낼 수 있도록 칠 일간만 여유를 주십시오. 그래도 우리를 구하러 오는 자가 없으면 항복하겠습니다." 　4) 이리하여 그 전갈은 사울이 사는 기브아에도 다다랐다. 소식을 전해 들은 사람들은 모두 목놓아 울었다. 　5) 마침 사울이 소를 몰고 들에서 들어오다가 그 광경을 보고 우는 이유를 묻자, 사람들이 야베스에서 온 전갈을 들려주었다. 　6) 이 말을 듣는 순간 하느님의 기운이 임하여 사울은 크게 분기가 치솟았다. 　7) 사울은 겨릿소 한 쌍을 끌어다가 각을 떠 이스라엘 전지역에 보내면서 "누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따라 나서지 않는 자는 이 모양이 되리라." 하고 전하게 하였다. 그러자 백성들은 주를 두려워하며 일제히 따라 나섰다. 　8) 사울이 베젝에서 그들을 점호해 보니 이스라엘 사람이 삼십만, 유다 사람이 삼만이었다. 　9) 사울이 야베스 길르앗에서 전갈을 가지고 왔던 사람들에게 일렀다. "가서 사람들에게, 햇볕이 한창 내리쬘 때까지는 승리의 개가를 올리리라고 전하여라." 이 전갈을 받고 야베스 사람들은 매우 기뻐하였다. 　10) 그리고 나하스에게는 이렇게 말해 두었다. "내일 당신들한테 항복하러 나가겠습니다. 그 때에 가서 우리를 마음대로 하십시오." 　11) 이튿날 새벽녘에 사울은 군인들을 삼군으로 나누어, 적의 진지 한복판으로 곧장 쳐들어가서 햇볕이 내리쬘 때까지 암몬 군을 무찔렀다. 살아 남은 자들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 도망쳤다. 　12) 백성들이 사무엘에게 "사울 따위가 우리 임금이 되겠느냐고 하던 자들이 누군지, 그런 자들은 죽여버리겠습니다. 허락해 주십시오." 하고 요구하였다. 　13) 그러나 사울은 "안 될 말이오. 야훼께서 이스라엘에 승리를 안겨주신 이 날에 사형이 웬 말이오?" 하며 허락하지 않았다. 　14) 사무엘이 백성에게 "자, 길갈로 가서 즉위식을 올립시다." 하고 말하자 　15) 백성들은 모두 길갈로 올라가 사울을 야훼 앞에서 왕으로 모시고 거기에서 야훼께 친교제를 드렸다. 사울과 이스라엘 모든 사람이 크게 기뻐하였다.

And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you.” / *Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scrolls gifts. Now Nahash king of the Ammonites oppressed the Gadites and Reubenites severely. He gouged out all their right eyes and struck terror and dread in Israel. Not a man remained among the Israelites beyond the Jordan whose right eye was not gouged out by Nahash king of the Ammonites, except that seven thousand men fled from the Ammonites and entered Jabesh Gilead. About a month later, 1 Nahash 　2) But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel.” 　3) The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you.” 　4) When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud. 　5) Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said. 　6) When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. 　7) He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one. 　8) When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand. 　9) They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 　10) They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.” 　11) The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. 　12) The people then said to Samuel, “Who was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.” 　13) But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today, for this day the Lord has rescued Israel.” 　14) Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingship.” 　15) So all the people went to Gilgal and made Saul king in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.
