"자네를 죽이시다니, 결코 그런 일은 없을 걸세. 내가 분명히 말하지만, 우리 아버지는 큰 일이든지 작은 일이든지, 나에게 알리지 않고서는 하시지를 않네. 그런데 우리 아버지가 이 일이라고 해서 나에게 숨기실 까닭이 무엇이겠는가? 그럴 리가 없네." 　3) 그러나 다윗은 맹세까지 하면서 말하였다. "자네가 나를 지극히 아낀다는 것은, 자네의 아버님도 잘 알고 계시지 않은가? 그렇기 때문에 이 일만은 자네에게 알려서는 안 된다고 생각하셨을 걸세. 자네가 알면 매우 슬퍼할 테니까 말일세. 주님께서 살아 계시니, 내가 자네에게 분명히 말하겠네. 나와 죽음 사이는 한 발짝밖에 되지 않네." 　4) 요나단이 다윗에게 제안하였다. "주 이스라엘의 하나님이 우리의 증인이시네. 내가 내일이나 모레 이맘때에 아버지의 뜻을 살펴보고, 자네에게 대하여 좋게 생각하신다면, 사람을 보내어 알리겠네. 　13) 아버지가 자네를 해치려 한다는 것을 내가 알고도, 그것을 자네에게 알리지 않아서, 자네가 안전하게 피신하지 못하게 된다면, 주님께서 이 요나단에게 무슨 벌을 내리셔도 달게 받겠네. 주님께서 나의 아버지와 함께 계셨던 것처럼, 자네와도 함께 계시기를 바라네. 　14) 그 대신 내가 살아 있는 동안은, 내가 주님의 인자하심을 누리며 살 수 있게 해주게. 내가 죽은 다음에라도, 　15) 주님께서 자네 다윗의 원수들을 이 세상에서 다 없애 버리시는 날에라도, 나의 집안과 의리를 끊지 말고 지켜 주게." 　16) 그런 다음에 요나단은 다윗의 집안과 언약을 맺고 말하였다. "다윗이 저에게 베들레헴에 다녀올 수 있도록 허락하여 달라고 간곡히 요청하였습니다. 　29) 자기 집안이 베들레헴 성읍에서 제사를 드리는데, 자기 형이 다녀가라고 했다고 하면서, 제가 자기를 아낀다면 자기 형을 만나게 해 달라고, 저에게 간청을 하였습니다. 그래서 그가 지금 임금님의 식탁에 나오지 못하였습니다." 　30) 사울이 요나단에게 화를 내면서 소리쳤다. "이 패역무도한 계집의 자식아, 네가 이새의 아들과 단짝이 된 것을 내가 모를 줄 알았더냐? 그런 녀석과 단짝이 되다니, 너에게도 부끄러운 일이고 너를 낳은 네 어미를 발가벗기는 망신이 될 뿐이다. 　31) 이새의 아들이 이 세상에 살아 있는 한은, 너도 안전하지 못하고, 너의 나라도 안전하지 못할 줄 알아라. 빨리 가서 그 녀석을 당장에 끌어 오너라. 그 녀석은 죽어야 마땅하다." 　32) 요나단이 자기 아버지 사울에게 "그가 무슨 못할 일을 하였기에 죽어야 합니까?" 하고 항의하니, 　33) 그 순간, 사울이 요나단을 찔러 죽이려고 창을 뽑아 겨냥하였다. 그제서야 요나단은 자기 아버지가 다윗을 죽이려고 단단히 벼르고 있다는 것을 알아차렸다. 　34) 요나단도 화가 치밀어 식탁에서 일어섰다. 그리고 요나단은 자기 아버지가 다윗을 모욕한 것이 가슴 아파서, 그 달의 이틀째가 되던 그 날은 하루 종일 아무것도 먹지 않았다. 　35) 그 다음날 아침에 요나단은 어린 종을 하나 데리고 들녘으로 나가서, 다윗과 약속한 장소로 갔다. 　36) 거기에서 요나단은 자기가 데리고 온 어린 종에게 "너는 막 달려가서 내가 지금 쏘는 화살을 주워 오너라!" 하고 시켰다. 어린 종이 달려가자, 요나단은 그의 머리 위로 화살을 쏘았다. 　37) 요나단이 쏜 화살이 떨어진 곳으로 그 어린 종이 달려가자, 요나단이 그의 뒤에다 대고 소리쳤다. "아직도 덜 갔다! 화살이 더 먼 곳에 있지 않느냐?" 　38) 요나단이 그 소년의 뒤에다 대고 계속 소리쳤다. 삼상 20:1-42 　1) 다윗이 라마에 있는 나욧에서 도망하여 요나단을 찾아가 항의하였다. "내가 무슨 짓을 했단 말인가? 내가 무슨 못할 짓을 했는가? 자네 아버님께 무슨 잘못을 저질렀기에 이렇게 내 목숨을 노리신단 말인가?" 　2) 요나단은 "자네를 죽이시다니, 그럴 리가 있나? 우리 아버지는 큰일이든 작은일이든 나에게 알리지 않고 하시는 일이 없으시다네. 그런데 이 일만은 나에게 숨기실 리가 있겠는가?" 하고 말하였다. 　3) 다윗은 다시 항의하였다. "틀림없이 자네 아버님께서 자네가 나를 끔찍이 생각해 주는 것을 아시고 자네가 괴로워할까봐 이 일만은 자네에게 알리지 않기로 하신 거야. 나는 한 발만 까딱해도 영락없이 죽을 몸이야. 이것은 하느님도 아시고 자네도 아는 일 아닌가?" 　4) "그럼 내가 어떻게 하면 좋을지 자네의 소원을 말해 보게." 요나단이 이렇게 제의하자 　5) 다윗이 부탁하였다. "내일이 초하루, 내가 임금님의 정찬에 나가는 날이 아닌가? 그러니 내가 삼일 저녁까지 들에 나가 숨어 있게 해주게나. 　6) 만일 자네 아버님께서 내가 보이지 않는다고 찾으시거든, 문중의 주년제가 있어 속히 고향 베들레헴에 다녀올 수 있도록 휴가를 청하더라고 말해 주게. 　7) 그래서 만일 좋다고 하시면 이 몸이 무사하겠지만, 화를 내신다면 나를 해치려고 결심하신 걸로 알게. 　8) 제발 우정을 지켜주게. 자네는 야훼 앞에서 나와 엄숙히 의형제를 맺지 않았는가? 만약 나에게 허물이 있다면 차라리 자네가 날 죽이게. 자네 아버님의 손을 빌 것까지는 없지 않은가?" 　9) "천만에!" 하면서 요나단이 말하였다. "만약 우리 아버님이 자네를 해치려고 마음 잡수신 것을 알게 된다면, 내가 어찌 자네에게 알려주지 않겠는가?" 　10) 다윗이 "자네 아버님께서 역정을 내실 경우, 누가 그것을 알려주겠는가?" 하고 묻자 　11) 요나단이 "들로 나가자." 하며 다윗을 들로 데리고 나갔다. 　12) 거기에서 요나단은 다윗에게 약속하였다. "다윗이 베들레헴엘 좀 다녀오게 해달라고 청하더군요. 　29) 형들이 고향에서 지내는 문중제사에 다녀와야 하니 갔다 오게 허락해 달라고 저한테 간청했습니다. 그래서 아버님께서 베푸시는 식탁에 나오지 못한 것입니다." 　30) 이 말을 듣고 사울은 요나단에게 버럭 화를 냈다. "이 몹쓸 화냥년의 자식놈아! 그래 네가 이새의 아들놈하고 단짝이 된 것을 내가 모를 줄 아느냐? 네 망신이 어미 망신이 될 줄 알아라. 　31) 이새의 아들놈이 땅 위에 살아 있는 한 너와 네 왕관은 안전하지 못하리라. 당장 그 죽일 놈을 잡아들여라." 　32) 요나단이 "죽일 놈이라구요? 다윗이 무슨 짓을 했다고 그러십니까?" 하고 아버지에게 항의하자, 　33) 사울은 창을 뽑아 들고 아들을 죽이려 하였다. 요나단은 아버지가 다윗을 죽이기로 작정했다는 것을 알아차렸다. 　34) 요나단은 화가 나서 자리를 떴다. 그리고 축제 이틀째 되는 날에는 아무것도 먹지 않았다. 아버지가 다윗을 욕하였으므로 마음이 몹시 아팠던 것이다. 　35) 이튿날 요나단은 다윗과 약속한 시간에 어린아이 하나를 데리고 들로 나갔다. 　36) 그리고 아이에게 활을 쏠 테니 뛰어가 화살을 집어 오라고 시키고는 뛰어가는 아이의 머리 위로 활을 쏘았다. 　37) 요나단은 아이가 화살이 떨어진 지점에 닿을 즈음 해서, 그 아이 뒤에다 대고 "화살은 더 나가야 있다." 하고 소리쳤다. 　38) "왜 머뭇거리고 있느냐? 어서 빨리 집어 오너라." 요나단의 시종은 그 화살을 집어가지고 상전에게 가져오면서도 　39) 무슨 영문인지 몰랐다. 다만 요나단과 다윗만이 그 곡절을 알고 있었다. 　40) 요나단은 시종에게 자기의 무기를 주어 성 안으로 돌려보냈다. 　41) 시종이 떠나자 다윗은 숨어 있던 등성이 뒤에서 일어나 세 번 땅에 엎드려 절을 하고는 둘이서 서로 얼싸안고 실컷 울었다. 　42) 그리고 나서 요나단이 다윗에게 말하였다. "가보게. 잘되기를 빌겠네. 우리는 서로 야훼의 이름으로 맹세한 몸이 아닌가! 그러니 야훼께서 자네와 나, 자네 후손과 내 후손 사이에 언제까지나 서주실 것일세." 다윗은 곧 떠나가고 요나단은 성 안으로 돌아왔다.

Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!” 　3) But David took an oath and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.’ Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.” 　4) Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.” 　5) So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast, and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow. 　6) If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission to hurry to Bethlehem, his hometown, because an annual sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’ 　7) If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.” 　30) Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 　31) As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!” 　32) “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father. 　33) But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David. 　34) Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the feast he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David. 　35) In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him, 　36) and he said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 　37) When the boy came to the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?” 　38) Then he shouted, “Hurry! Go quickly! May the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father. 　14) If I am still alive, show me the faithful love of the LORD; but if I die, 　15) never cut off your faithful love from my house, even if the LORD were to cut off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth." 　16) Thus Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD seek out the enemies of David." 　17) Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own life. 　18) Jonathan said to him, "Tomorrow is the new moon; you will be missed, because your place will be empty. 　19) On the day after tomorrow, you shall go a long way down; go to the place where you hid yourself earlier, and remain beside the stone there. 　20) I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. 　21) Then I will send the boy, saying, 'Go, find the arrows.' If I say to the boy, 'Look, the arrows are on this side of you, collect them,' then you are to come, for, as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger. 　22) But if I say to the young man, 'Look, the arrows are beyond you,' then go; for the LORD has sent you away. 　23) As for the matter about which you and I have spoken, the LORD is witness between you and me forever." 　24) So David hid himself in the field. When the new moon came, the king sat at the feast to eat. 　25) The king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall. Jonathan stood, while Abner sat by Saul's side; but David's place was empty. 　26) Saul did not say anything that day; for he thought, "Something has befallen him; he is not clean, surely he is not clean." 　27) But on the second day, the day after the new moon, David's place was empty. And Saul said to his son Jonathan, "Why has the son of Jesse not come to the feast, either yesterday or today?" 　28) Jonathan answered Saul, "David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem; 　29) he said, 'Let me go; for our family is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your sight, let me get away, and see my brothers.' For this reason he has not come to the king's table." 　30) Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan. He said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? 　31) For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die." 　32) Then Jonathan answered his father Saul, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?" 　33) But Saul threw his spear at him to strike him; so Jonathan knew that it was the decision of his father to put David to death. 　34) Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food on the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, and because his father had disgraced him. 　35) In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him was a little boy. 　36) He said to the boy, "Run and find the arrows that I shoot." As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 　37) When the boy came to the place where Jonathan's arrow had fallen, Jonathan called after the boy and said, "Is the arrow not beyond you?" 　38) Jonathan called after the boy, "Hurry, be quick, do not linger." So Jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows and came to his master. 　39) But the boy knew nothing; only Jonathan and David knew the arrangement. 　40) Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said to him, "Go and carry them to the city." 　41) As soon as the boy had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He bowed three times, and they kissed each other, and wept with each other; David wept the more. 　42) Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, since both of us have sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.'" He got up and left; and Jonathan went into the city.
