이번 주는 지난주에 이어서 사무엘이 하나님의 선지자로 부르심을 받을 때에 그에게 임하였던 하나님의 말씀, 곧 엘리 집에 대한 심판이 이루어지는 장면을 읽게 됩니다.

이 장면에는 당시 말씀이 희귀하였던 시대상처럼 말씀을 제대로 듣지 않았던 엘리 집안과 이스라엘 백성이 어떠한 결과를 보게 되는지에 대한 교훈이 담겨 있습니다.

삼상 4:1-22 　1) 사무엘이 말을 하면, 온 이스라엘이 귀를 기울여 들었다. 그 무렵에 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘을 치려고 모여들었다. 이스라엘 사람은 블레셋 사람과 싸우려고 나가서 에벤에셀에 진을 쳤고, 블레셋 사람은 아벡에 진을 쳤다. 　2) 블레셋 사람이 전열을 갖추고 이스라엘 사람을 치자, 치열한 싸움이 벌어졌다. 이스라엘은 이 싸움에서 블레셋에게 졌고, 그 벌판에서 죽은 이스라엘 사람은 사천 명쯤 되었다. 　3) 이스라엘의 패잔병들이 진으로 돌아왔을 때에, 장로들이 말하였다. "주님께서 오늘 우리가 블레셋 사람에게 지도록 하신 까닭이 무엇이겠느냐? 실로에 가서 주님의 언약궤를 우리에게로 모셔다가 우리 한가운데에 있게 하여, 우리를 원수의 손에서 구하여 주시도록 하자!" 　4) 그래서 이스라엘 백성이 실로로 사람들을 보냈다. 그들이 거기 그룹들 사이에 앉아 계시는 만군의 주님의 언약궤를 메고 왔다. 하나님의 언약궤를 가져올 때에 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 함께 왔다. 　5) 주님의 언약궤가 진으로 들어올 때에 모든 이스라엘 백성이 땅이 진동할 정도로 크게 환호성을 올렸다. 　6) 블레셋 사람이 그 환호하는 소리를 듣고 "저 히브리 사람의 진에서 저렇게 환호하는 소리가 들리는 까닭이 무엇이냐?" 하고 묻다가, 주님의 궤가 진에 들어갔기 때문이라는 것을 알았다. 　7) 블레셋 사람이 두려워하면서 말하였다. "이스라엘 진에 그들의 신이 들어갔다." 그래서 그들은 외쳤다. "이제 우리에게 화가 미쳤다. 일찍이 이런 일이 없었다. 　8) 우리에게 화가 미쳤는데, 누가 저 강력한 신의 손에서 우리를 건질 수가 있겠느냐? 그 신들은 광야에서 온갖 재앙으로 이집트 사람을 쳐서 죽게 한 신들이다. 　9) 블레셋 사람들아, 대장부답게 힘을 내어라! 그렇지 않으면, 히브리 사람이 우리의 종이 되었던 것처럼, 우리가 그들의 종이 될 것이다. 너희는 대장부답게 나가서 싸워라!" 　10) 그런 다음에 블레셋 사람이 전투에 임하니, 이스라엘이 져서 제각기 자기 장막으로 달아났다. 이스라엘은 이 때에 아주 크게 져서, 보병 삼만 명이 죽었다. 　11) 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고, 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 이 때 전사하였다. 　12) 어떤 베냐민 사람이 싸움터에서 빠져 나와, 그 날로 실로에 이르렀는데, 슬픈 나머지 옷을 찢고, 머리에는 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고 있었다. 　13) 그 사람이 왔을 때에, 엘리는 길가 의자에 앉아서 길을 내다보면서, 마음 속으로 하나님의 궤를 걱정하고 있었다. 그 사람이 성읍에 이르러서 소식을 전하니, 온 성읍이 두려워하며 슬피 울부짖었다. 　14) 엘리가 그 울부짖는 소리를 듣고 물었다. "저 소리가 무슨 소리냐?" 그 사람이 급히 달려와서 엘리에게 소식을 전하였다. 　15) 그 무렵, 엘리는 아흔여덟 살된 노인으로서, 눈이 어두워져서 앞을 거의 볼 수 없었다. 　16) 그 사람이 엘리에게 말하였다. "저는 전쟁터에서 도망쳐 나온 사람입니다. 전쟁터에서 오늘 도망쳐 오는 길입니다." 엘리가 물었다. "젊은이, 무슨 일이 일어났소?" 　17) 소식을 전하는 그 사람이 대답하였다. "이스라엘 백성은 블레셋 사람 앞에서 도망쳤고, 백성 가운데는 죽은 사람이 매우 많습니다. 제사장님의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 전사하였고, 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼습니다." 　18) 그가 하나님의 궤에 대한 소식을 전할 때에, 엘리는 앉아 있던 의자에서 뒤로 넘어져, 문 곁으로 쓰러져서 목이 부러져 죽었다. 늙은데다가 몸까지 무거웠기 때문이다. 그는 마흔 해 동안 이스라엘의 사사로 있었다. 　19) 그 때에 엘리의 며느리인 비느하스의 아내는 임신 중이었으며, 출산할 때가 가까웠는데, 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고 자기의 시아버지와 남편도 죽었다는 소식을 듣자, 갑자기 진통이 일어나, 구부리고 앉은 채 몸을 풀었다. 　20) 그러다가 그는 거의 죽게 되었다. 그 때에 곁에 서 있던 여인들이 "아들을 낳았으니 걱정하지 말아요!" 하고 말해 주었다. 그러나 산모는 대답도 없고, 관심도 보이지 않다가, 　21) 그 아이의 이름을 ①이가봇이라고 지어 주며, "이스라엘에서 영광이 떠났다" 하는 말만을 남겼다. 하나님의 궤를 빼앗긴 데다가, 시아버지도 죽고 남편도 죽었기 때문이었다. / ①'영광이 없음' 　22) 거기에다가 하나님의 궤까지 빼앗겼기 때문에, 이스라엘에서 영광이 떠났다고 말했던 것이다.

삼상 4:1-22 　1) 그리하여 사무엘이 하는 말은 그대로 온 이스라엘에 통하게 되었다. 그 무렵, 불레셋 군이 이스라엘을 치러 몰려오자, 이스라엘 군도 그들을 맞아 싸우려고 출동하였다. 이스라엘 군은 에벤에젤에 진을 쳤고 불레셋 군은 아벡에 진을 쳤다. 　2) 불레셋 군이 이스라엘 군을 향하여 열을 지어 싸움을 벌였는데, 이스라엘 군은 불레셋 군에게 패하여 싸움터에서 죽은 군사가 사천 명이나 되었다. 　3) 군사들이 진영으로 돌아오자 이스라엘의 장로들이 부르짖었다. "야훼께서 오늘 우리를 불레셋 군에게 패하게 하시니, 이런 변이 어디 있느냐? 실로에 있는 야훼의 계약궤를 모셔 오자. 그것을 우리 가운데 모시면 적군의 손에서 우리를 구해 내실 것이다." 　4) 그리하여 진영에서 사람을 실로에 보내어 거룹을 타고 만군을 거느리시는 야훼의 계약궤를 모셔 오게 하였다. 당시에 그 계약궤를 모시고 있었던 사람은 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스였다. 　5) 야훼의 계약궤가 진에 도착하자 온 이스라엘 군은 땅이 진동하도록 함성을 올렸다. 　6) 불레셋 군은 이 함성을 듣고 "히브리 진영에서 저렇게 큰 함성이 터지니 웬일이냐?" 하며 웅성거리다가 야훼의 궤가 이스라엘 진영에 들어왔다는 것을 알았다. 　7) 불레셋 군은 겁에 질려 소리쳤다. "이스라엘의 신이 진영에 들어왔으니 이제 우리는 망했구나. 이런 일은 일찍이 없었는데, 　8) 이제 우리는 망했다. 누가 저 무서운 신에게서 우리를 살려내겠느냐? 갖가지 재앙과 질병으로 이집트인들을 친 신이 아니냐! 　9) 그러니 불레셋 사람들아, 힘을 내어라. 사나이답게 싸우자! 지금까지는 히브리인이 우리를 섬겼지만, 이제는 우리가 그들의 종이 될 판국이니, 자, 사나이답게 싸우자!" 　10) 이리하여 불레셋 군이 짓쳐 들어오자 이스라엘 군은 크게 패하여 제각기 자기 천막으로 도망쳤다. 이스라엘 군은 보병이 삼만이나 쓰러졌으며 　11) 하느님의 궤도 빼앗기고 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽었다. 　12) 그 날 베냐민 사람 하나가 싸움터에서 빠져 나와 실로로 달려왔다. 옷은 갈가리 찢기고 머리에는 흙을 뒤집어쓴 채 　13) 그가 다다랐을 때, 엘리는 하느님의 궤가 걱정이 되어 성문 곁 의자에 앉아 소식을 기다리고 있었다. 그 사람이 성 안에 들어와 전쟁 소식을 전하자 온 성민이 울부짖었다. 　14) 그 아우성 소리를 듣고 엘리가, 어찌하여 이렇게 소란스러우냐고 묻자 그 사람이 급히 엘리 앞에 나아와 소식을 전하였다. 　15) 엘리는 나이가 구십팔 세나 되었으므로 눈이 어두워 앞을 보지 못하였다. 　16) 그 사람이 엘리에게 "저는 싸움터에서 왔습니다. 지금 막 싸움터에서 뛰어오는 길입니다." 하고 말하자 엘리는 "그래 어떻더냐?" 하고 물었다. 　17) "이스라엘 군은 많은 전사자를 내고 불레셋 군에게 쫓겨 뿔뿔이 도망치고 말았습니다. 사제님의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 죽고, 하느님의 궤도 빼앗겼습니다." 전령이 이렇게 대답하자, 　18) 성문 곁 의자에 앉아 있던 엘리는 하느님의 궤를 빼앗겼다는 말에 그만 뒤로 넘어져 목이 부러져 죽었다. 그는 늙어 몸이 무거웠던 것이다. 이리하여 사십 년 동안 이스라엘을 영도한 그의 생애는 끝났다. 　19) 그의 며느리, 비느하스의 아내는 임신 중이었는데 해산할 날이 다 되어 하느님의 궤를 빼앗긴데다가 시아버지와 남편마저 죽었다는 소식을 듣자 갑자기 진통이 오는 바람에 웅크린 채 몸을 풀었다. 　20) 그 여인이 숨을 거두려 할 때 시중을 들던 여자들이 "염려말아요, 아들이오." 하고 알렸으나, 그 말은 들은 체도 않고 대꾸도 없이 　21) 다만 "영광이 이스라엘을 떠났구나." 하고 중얼거렸다. 그리고 그 아기의 이름을 이가봇이라 하였다. 하느님의 궤는 빼앗기고 시아버지와 남편은 죽었다고 해서 그렇게 말하였던 것이다. 　22) 그는 "하느님의 궤를 빼앗겼으니 이제 영광은 이스라엘을 떠났다." 하고 말하였다.

삼상 4:1-22 　1) And Samuel’s word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 　2) The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 　3) When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.” 　4) So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 　5) When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 　6) Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?” When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 　7) the Philistines were afraid. “A god has* come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. / *Or “Gods have (see Septuagint) 　8) We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 　9) Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!” 　10) So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 　11) The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. 　12) That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 　13) When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry. 　14) Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?” The man hurried over to Eli, 　15) who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 　16) He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.” Eli asked, “What happened, my son?” 　17) The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 　18) When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led* Israel forty years. / *Traditionally judged 　19) His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 　20) As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention. 　21) She named the boy Ichabod,* saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel” - because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. / *Ichabod means no glory. 　22) She said, “The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek. 　2) The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 　3) And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD here from Shiloh, that it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies." 　4) So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 　5) As soon as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 　6) And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, "What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" And when they learned that the ark of the LORD had come to the camp, 　7) the Philistines were afraid, for they said, "A god has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 　8) Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 　9) Take courage, and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you; be men and fight." 　10) So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. 　11) And the ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died. 　12) A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 　13) When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 　15) Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 　16) And the man said to Eli, "I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today." And he said, "How did it go, my son?" 　17) He who brought the news answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured." 　18) As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years. 　19) Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 　20) And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, "Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer or pay attention. 　21) And she named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 　22) And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."
